As many as 168 drug samples in Himachal Pradesh have failed quality tests in the past three years.

The information was shared in the state Legislative Assembly, being held at Tapovan, Dharamshala, on Thursday, in a written reply to a question asked by BJP MLA Vipin Singh Parmar.

A total of 12,034 drug samples were taken and sent for testing during this period. The government stated that a state-level drug testing laboratory has been set up at Baddi in Solan district.

In addition, a combined testing laboratory is functioning at Kandaghat in Solan district, where samples of food items along with medicines are tested.

The laboratory in Baddi, “Drug Testing Laboratory Baddi,” has been operational since January 8, 2025. It has the capacity to analyse around 6,000 samples annually. The lab received accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) on November 12.

The government further informed that legal action has been taken against 40 industrial units whose drug samples were found to have failed.

Administrative action under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 has been initiated in 52 cases. Probe is underway in 65 cases.

In the remaining 11 cases, manufacturing units challenged the test reports; out of these, seven samples were found to be of standard quality, while nine reports are still pending with the Central Drug Laboratory, Kolkata.
